Reduced Complexity Models

Within the central research initiative of the Helmholtz society on Information and Data Science our proposal on new approaches for the development of Reduced Complexity Models was one of only 5 proposals to be selected and fully funded. For details please see the press release.

Research interests
The PMMF group pursues two main lines of research, the interaction of energetic and/or reactive species with surfaces and modern simulation techniques, data analysis methods and optimal experimental design. Machine learning approaches (i.e. Gaussian processes), Artificial Intelligence techniques (ANNs) and multiscale modelling are an integral part of the activities. Recent activities include
  • Model complexity reduction approaches
  • Polynomial Chaos Expansion methods for Uncertainty Quantification
  • ill-posed inverse problems (e.g. time resolved power density estimation in ASDEX Upgrade, deconvolutions)
  • Molecular Dynamics Simulations:
  • Bayesian Inference: Bayesian Experimental Design, Integrated Data Analysis, Probabilistic Prediction, Intelligent instruments
  • High-dimensional integration: Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods (eg thermodynamic integration, slice sampling, nested sampling,...)
  • Real-time data analysis (e.g. using Bayesian Neural Networks (BNN)) e.g. for Mass spectrometer analysis or Ellipsometry
